Fans waited hours to catch a glimpse of the action.  Posted by Picasa

On the set of Bill, a comedy movie that will come out in about a year, light equipment, cameras, and crowds were the norm. Curious bystanders stood for hours hoping for a glimpse of their favorite stars. when Jesica Alba emerged, the teenagers screamed and ran toward her in hopes of getting an autograph.

The people working on this set were there for 12 hours or more. I don't know how any industry can make people work hours like that on a regular basis.

Photography was permitted by bystanders, but flash was not, for obvious reasons. A long lens is a good choice for a movie set, since you will frequently be working from a distance. Once night fell the challenge was what ISO to use. When the stars stepped from the artificial light, a high ISO like 1600 or even 3200 was merited. But under the stage lights, it's like daylight. I enjoyed photographing the stage hands and their equipment more than the stars themselves. Stage hands are more accessible, and provide some interesting lighting opportunities that you can't get anywhere else.

Having done 3 shoots in a week, these posts have to be brief.

Dare 2 Dream is a worship band I've done photoshoots of in the past, but now they have several new members. I think of them as Dare 2 Dream 2.

This shoot was done at Destiny Church on the West side, a large but modest church.

Most of these shots were taken with a 28 - 135 with a 67 objective. The image stabilization, wide objective (let's a lot of light in), and the zoom range, make it a great lens for both individual portraits and limited distance shots. Other shots were taken with th e18-55 lens that, although an inexpensive kit lens, provides a wide angle, useful for group shots.

Dare 2 Dream keeps their audience rockin' while they worship.

Photography Adventure: Saints, Heroes, and Ghosts

What could be better than a photoshoot of a band in a haunted movie theater. The theater provided a plethora of compositions for both individual and group shots.

Jon Lamborn, one of the best photographers in the St. Louis area, was not only in the band, he was shooting the band with his Nikon and wireless remote. This guy has more talent, and more talents, than just about anyone I know. He's a musician, photographer, and does fabulous work with photoshop.

Other band members include Gabe (drummer), Micah who plays a mean piano, and Derek, the sound man. The talent that eminates from these artists is amazing. My only regret is that I don't have a sound file for you to listen to.

NewsFlash: Grafton Harbor

I'll be selling my photography prints, books, post cards, etc. at Grafton Harbor's Sunset Saturday on June 10th. Come on up to Grafton Illinois, one of the most beautiful little river towns around and stop by for a visit. If you've never been to Grafton you are in for a treat. Grafton is situated along the river road, has a main street lined with great little shops, and has the most beautiful bike path in the St. Louis area. Bring your bike and ride the river road bike path. Plan to stay all day. Have lunch and stop by the Piasa winery.

A special note: My sister's recently published book, "Beneath the Big Muddy" will be on sale at Grafton Harbor for Sunset Saturday. This is a fiction novel that is set in the beautiful Alton area. The story features my favorite character, Kristi Lesko, a wildlife photographer I invented, who works for International Species Magazine (a fictional magazine). Her book is selling out pretty quickly at each of the places it is carried. To read more about the book visit:

Sunset Saturday will run from 11 am until sundown. I recommend coming early if you want to purchase, "Beneath the Big Muddy" or one of my best selling, signed, wildlife prints. I suspect some items, especially the book, will sell out pretty quickly. Our inventory is low at this time because Teresa just held a book signing in Alton on May 20th.

The book and prints make great gift ideas. I hope to see you there. Oh, and while you are there, I'll answer your photography questions free of charge (as time permits). So if you need some help selecting a camera, correcting a problem in your photos (bring the photos to show me), or just want to visit, stop by and introduce yourself.

PS. My real name is Kathy Denton, so if you are looking for me in Grafton ask for my booth at the harbor.
